The sea has been a fascinating world full of secrets and animals different from of the land are. One of the biggest challenges of the humans has always been being able to coexist underwater with them.
The advances have led for years to an overfishing that today is becoming unsustainable.

In turn, the sea has become a dump where ships empty their tanks, and humans beings use it as a landfill.

The planet's early global warming is causing its inhabitants to begin to die and become scarce.

Aware of this rapid deterioration and mistreatment, Santiagua has an awareness plan. Every single diver does something on their part and thus contribute to the salvation of the planet's seas and our fantastic Cantabrian Sea.

To do this, since the beginning of this project, Santiagua has been collaborating with different entities and environmental groups, with clear objectives:

A Change of attitudes and behaviour that is causing the death of our seas and in particular The Cantabrian Coast:

  • BRING AWARENESS to the Peregrinosub about the threat caused by any dumping of plastic and the danger it poses for both marine and human life. Also about the microplastics which are sourced in many clothes and other objects of daily use.
  • DENOUNCE the illegal dumping of fuels by the merchant fleets which navigate in this zone.
  • TRANSMIT exactly what the Climate change is causing in the Cantabrian sea. Forinstance the lethal sea temperature increase for marine life.
  • ACHIEVE that the Camino de Santiagua, in a near future, will be a pollution free route flourishing in life and marine ecosystems, full of biodiversity to reactivate and preserve the Cantabrian life.

Oceans

  • Oceans cover three-quarters of the Earth's surface, contain 87 percent of the planet's water, and account for 99 percent of the planet's habitable surface by volume.
  • The oceans contain almost 200,000 identified species, but the real numbers may be in the millions.
  • The oceans serve as the world's largest source of protein. More than 3 billion people depend on the oceans as their main source of protein. One hundred of the planet's habitable surface in volume.
  • Coastal waters are deteriorating due to pollution and “eutrophication”. Without coordinated efforts, coastal "eutrophication" is expected to increase in 20 percent of large marine ecosystems by 2050.
Meaning of “eutrophication”: Accumulation of organic waste on the seacoast, in a lake, lagoon, reservoir, etc., which causes the proliferation of certain algae.

World Oceans Day

Every 8 of June, is World Oceans Day, a date established by the UN with the aim of recognizing the importance of the oceans for all species, since they represent the main lung of the planet, and are responsible for generating oxygen and achieve ecological balance both aquatic and terrestrial
